“We tend to regard violence and murder in the name of honour as relics of a bygone age. Even if the phenomenon has existed for an immensely long time, this perspective is misleading. A great deal supports the view that honour is becoming more important in the new multicultural Europe. In contrast to what certain researchers thought would happen—I am thinking here particularly of the famous American sociologist Peter L Berger, who in 1974 published the essay ‘On the Obsolescence of the Concept of Honour’—it does not appear that honour has become antiquated. On the contrary, honour is linked to the self-image of different minority groups. The chastity and modesty of women is emblematic to these collective identities. Old traditions are being reinforced or renewed in the diaspora.”
Nota: É gente como esta que ainda conseguirá, um dia, legalizar a mutilação genital feminina, com base na especificidade cultural de uma qualquer minoria étnica.
